(shit I didn't take into consideration the width of my blog hahaha)
I started a random page of Adrians because I was trying to practice characters or something...? I just wanted to find a way of drawing him that I liked, which is the reason he looks different every time I post something of him (that and because I have consistency issues). It kinda seems like I'm starting to adopt him as an OC.
Haha. Get it. Adopt.
Because he's my child in Tomodachi Life.
Ok that pun was unintentional, seriously.
Anyway, I ended up drawing this direct-on bust shot of him, and like 99% of how my drawings start out (or even end up...) he had no shirt. And I was like no dude, this is a problem. So I opened up Tomodachi for ideas and god dammit the kid was wearing his gakuran AGAIN. (What's with my children and their love for school uniforms?) So I put him in a gakuran. Then I thought I might as well do a bust shot of Maximilian in his gakuran while I'm at it.
They turned out looking like school photos, and well... The comic was born soon after.
Actually, I can't say "soon" because this took quite a while to do... I'm no comic artist by any means and I only drafted a rough storyboard when I was already half way into the thing and realized I HAD NO IDEA HOW I WANTED THIS TO PROCEED. I've done maybe a total of ten storyboards in my entire life, seven of which were probably never used for anything ha ha haaa. In the end, I didn't actually follow the storyboard that much and relied on dialogue I scrawled off to the side instead.
I can't panel for balls and I have no idea whatsoever how to convey time/action through frames so I didn't even bother trying and opted for one long straight block.
And inconsistency is super obvious here because I wanted to experiment with how to draw people differently but was too lazy to go back and make them all the same hurhurhur.
Also, in my state of confusion and supreme Asian-ness I by mistake drew this comic in MANHUA/MANGA STYLE INSTEAD OF WESTERN SO you have to read from right to left HAHAHAHAHA I'M A FAILURE.
Anyway, there's no real joke or anything here, it was just an excuse to try something different and to develop Maxi and Adrian a little. And to put those gakuran bust shots to good use.
Here are the full student IDs I did for fun!
Maximilian came first, so he's the older brother. I put him one year ahead of Adrian in school and gave him a fancier signature with the Chinese characters for Chow (Jay's last name) and Xu (my last name) incorporated since his personality type is "artist". Admittedly, my own signature is not very artistic or pleasant to look at.
Adrian is the younger brother so he's a first year at Sugoku Kawaii. His personality type is "thinker" so his signature is plain and modest because he spends more time thinking about... non-signature related things, I guess.
The IDs were time consuming but entertaining. I did it all in Photoshop so... no anchors or guides HAHA but it's not like I'm going to get serious about them and open Illustrator or InDesign for a couple fake IDs.
Their school, Sugoku Kawaii, means something along the lines of "super cute" in Japanese. It's a joke. I thought it would be weird to make them go to an American school if they have gakuran so... I guess they go to Sugoku Kawaii International High School of Japan now. I would've done the IDs in Japanese, too, but I felt like that would be stupid because most people who would read this comic don't understand Japanese. I still did them in Japanese student ID format, though. Gotta at least get it to kinda make sense, y'know.
The Sugoku Kawaii emblem was literally designed in two seconds and the president's seal is just the acronym SKHP: Sugoku Kawaii High School President.
I didn't include birth years for the boys but Adrian would be 15 and Maximilian would be 16.
